About this coloring picture

A baby stegosaurus walks to the left with its head tilted slightly down and a small smile on its face. This baby stegosaurus coloring page centers on the row of leaf-shaped plates along the back, which rise to a tall one in the middle and shrink toward the head and the tail tip. Each plate has thin lines fanning out from its base. On the right, a short fern with wavy-edged leaves grows from a thin ground line that runs beneath the dinosaur's feet.

Most of the body is one big open space, so it is easy to color smoothly. Try a soft green body with orange plates, or a blue body with yellow plates and a darker blue stripe on the underside. For something less expected, a warm brown dinosaur with purple plates would look striking next to a green fern. The plates are the part that takes patience. The fan lines inside them make narrow wedges, so color along the direction of the lines and use light pressure. A fine-tip marker can fill each wedge in a different shade of one color family. The round eye has a small highlight, which you can leave white so the dinosaur looks wide awake.

Crayons work well for the body and the tail. Colored pencils give you more control on the plates, the toes, and the ferns. When you finish, ask what this little dinosaur might be heading toward and whether it is hungry for the fern. You could also count the plates on its back and compare their sizes, from the tiny one near the neck to the tall one in the middle.

Pick a plate color that contrasts with the body. A green body looks bright with orange or yellow plates, and a blue body works well with pink or yellow ones. You can also shade each plate with two tones of the same color, using the lines at its base as a guide.
